Young people are often under-employed in the Asia-Pacific region. Millions of young people worldwide are unable to find meaningful, stable and well-paying sources of income, with an estimated 73 million young people currently looking for employment. Specifically, young farmers, who are the future of agriculture. Young people are not only tomorrow’s food leaders, but today’s change-makers. In addition to that, the programming of youth and agriculture presents a unique opportunity for gender transformation, as adolescence is a pivotal period of life in which gender norms are formed by young men and women. Although there is a growing body of work in agri-food systems on women’s empowerment, the literature does not generally distinguish between different age cohorts or life stages (e.g. household head, child/parental status, marital status, etc.). Empowering young women to take part in the change of the agricultural scene can bring us to new heights.

Decision making can be instilled within the youths as they need to decide what animal to buy, what seeds to plant, what bull to raise your heifer to… There are many different decisions made by young people in agriculture. In addition, they see the decisions taken for the farm on a daily basis, and understand the significance of making a decision and living with the consequences. Many other disciplines and values can be thought towards the future of our nation through agriculture and farming.
